The ongoing violence in several parts of Punjab and Haryana in the aftermath of the killing of a Dera leader in Vienna spilled over to Amritsar as well as an angry mob burnt down a dozen buses at the main bus stand, leading to police lathicharge and use of tear gas shells.
The protesters also damaged property at the prominent commercial area of the city.
"Police fired tear gas shells and lathicharged in an effort to bring the charged up mob under control when they went on a rampage in Hall bazar locality, smashing window panes and damaging property, " Kunwar Vijay Patap Singh, city SSP told PTI.
Heavy police force has been deployed at various sensitive places and the SSP assured that the situation is fully under control.Large scale damage was averted as all important establishment including schools were shut today.
In all, a dozen protesters were injured in the police action.
