Vizag Seaport Private Limited (VSPL), a subsidiary of Gammon Infrastructure Projects Limited, is planning to bring more area under the digital surveillance system at Visakhapatnam Seaport, a bulk cargo-handling terminal in the inner harbour of Visakhapatnam port.

In Phase I, the company has installed 17 surveillance cameras in an area of 70 acres to monitor cargo handling operations and allied activities. The installation was done by Axis Video Systems India Private Limited and its system integration partner Morcorp Solutions.

“The objective is to implement a surveillance system that goes beyond ensuring safety and improve our operational efficiency. Every camera will have a separate id and password and is positioned in such a way that every square meter is covered,” said Ragam Kishore, chief executive officer, VSPL, and chairman IPPTA, here on Wednesday.

VSPL has invested Rs 370 crore to operate Vizag Seaport in public private partnership. It started commercial operation in 2006 and expects to break-even this year, with Rs 120 crore revenue. The second phase would cover another 50 acres with an investment of Rs 150 crore. This would be completed by mid-2012.

VSPL has invested Rs 50 lakh for the IP system installation in the first phase and the number of security guards had come down to 32 from 73. “The internet and bandwidth cost varies between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh per month,” he added.
