Vedanta Viswavidyalaya Birodhi Sangarsha Samiti (VVBSS), the outfit spearheading the movement against the proposed world class university project to be set up by Anil Agarwal Foundation in Puri, has condemned yesterday’s incident in which the supporters of the local MLA hurled bombs and fired at the opponents of the university project.

It warned the police administration and the local MLA that if such attacks on the people carrying their agitation peacefully in a democratic manner recur in future, they will be held responsible for it.

The outfit also demanded strong action against the culprits involved in yesterday’s incident.

Eight persons, including five policemen, were injured yesterday when a fight broke out between the supporters and opponents of Vedanta University. Crude bombs were hurled and a pitched battle was fought near Nuanai area in Puri-Konark marine drive.

The local MLA, Maheswar Mohanty was holding a meeting of supporters of the Vedanta University at a forest IB when hundreds of agitators, opposing the project, reached the place. When both sides got into a skirmish, Mohanty left the area for a nearby farmhouse.

However, the opponents followed him to the farmhouse where both sides were engaged in another round of clash leading hurling of crude bombs. Under such violent situation, police had to escort Mohanty to Puri.
