Two persons were killed and five were seriously injured in a communal flare-up at the Kalupur area late on Sunday evening. |
The Dariapur and Kalupur police station areas form the hub of business activity in the walled city. All markets on Relief Road and Gandhi Road - which join Lal Darwaja area to the railway station - remained shut on Monday. |
These areas house the retail cloth market at Dhalgarwad and Teen Darwaja, the hardware market at Gandhi road, the electronic goods market at Relief road, the tarpaulin market at Paanchkuwa, the electrical goods market at Gandhi Road and the jewellary market at Rattan Pol. |
Police and other security personnel patrolled the area, which remained tense but incident-free on Monday. |
Curfew was imposed in Kalupur and adjacent Dariapur areas, while RAF personnel were deployed at the various troubled spots. |
There was no announcement of relaxation of curfew in these areas. |
However, other roads joining the railway station - from Gandhi Bridge and Ellisbridge - remained curfew-free to facilitate movement of train passengers. |
Both the persons killed were from the majority community, police stated. While one of them was burnt alive on Relief Road, the other died in stone throwing near Zakaria Masjid, near Kalupur police station. |
According to police, people of both communities indulged in stone pelting after heated exchange of words, and at around 10 pm, police had to lob about 20 tear-gas shells to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control. |
Of the five injured, two are reported to be serious and are admitted at the V S hospital in the city. This is the second major incident of rioting in Ahmedabad city since Friday. |
In Shah-e-Alam area, mobs clashed with each other, resulting in the death of one person. |
