Waste disposal norms hit wedding halls

Wedding halls in Mysore are now faced with one more problem, that of dumping garbage.

These halls collect a lot of garbage after weddings, but often dump it into the nearest dustbin or in the corner of a street. This practice is being continued despite several warnings and direct notice to them from the Mysore City Corporation (MCC).

Though, in accordance with the Centre's directive, these wedding halls are barred from using plastic that are less than 20 micron grade by the MCC, even now some of them use plastic rolls on the dining tables. The plastic sheets go into the dust bin along with the leftovers, leading to animals ingesting them and developing illnesses.

Now, the corporation commissioner and the mayor have jointly issued a final warning to these wedding halls, against continuing this system of garbage-disposal. They have been directed to use paper rolls on the dining tables instead of plastic rolls.

In order to create awareness on this among those who hire the wedding halls, owners of these halls have been directed to put up notices in the dining hall, wedding hall and outside.

The MCC has taken up the disposal of garbage in an orderly and scientific manner, under its ambitious 'Nirmal Nagar' scheme, initiated by the government of Karnataka.

In accordance with a directive from the Supreme Court, the commissioner and the mayor told these wedding hall owners, adding that the MCC had initiated other steps also to fulfill its objective.

If the wedding halls violate this final notice, the MCC has warned that they will be fined Rs 1,000 a day as per the City Corporation Act.
