WB approved $13.7 bn for 40 Indian projects in 4 years

The World Bank has approved financial assistance to the tune of over $13.7 billion for a total of 40 projects in India during the past four years, with over  $2 billion already distributed, Parliament was informed today.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena said that 40 projects in the country have secured World Bank assistance during the period between April 2007 and February 2011.

The total amount of assistance from the World Bank for the projects is $13,749 million, of which a cumulative amount of over $2,147 million has been distributed till last end of last month.

While 22 of the projects come under the central sector, others are being run by various state governments, Meena said.

Most of them are scheduled to be completed by 2014 or 2015. The projects cover a diverse range of sectors including water supply, sanitation, environmental management, power and fuel, health and so on.
