Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the people of India would foil attempts of "the enemies of the nation" who had tried to undermine India's peace and prosperity and resolved that India would walk tall, the economy would continue on the growth path and that India would never be divided. |
The PM, who held meetings all day with Home Minister Shivraj Patil and National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, addressed the nation in a telecast. "Your resilience and resolve will triumph over the evil designs of the merchants of death and destruction," he said. |
Singh first addressed the fear that communal violence would break out in India as an aftermath of the blasts yesterday. He said this was not the first time "our enemies" had tried to divide India. |
But, cautioning people against heeding rumour and the threat of division, he said, "Mumbai stands tall once again as the symbol of a united India. An inclusive India. These elements have not yet understood that we Indians can stand united. That we will stand united. They have not yet understood that we will never let them win." |
The PM also promised harsh action against those who had planned the attacks. |
"Let me assure you that the government will do whatever is required to deal with the challenge at hand. We will win this war against terror. Nothing will break our resolve," he said in a speech reminiscent of the one made by President George Bush after the 9/11 attacks. |
He said he was happy at the speed with which Mumbai and Srinagar had returned to normal. "This is living proof of our contempt for terrorism," he said. |
Commending the good work done by the police, the security forces, railway staff, firemen, medical personnel, government officials and others in responding to the tragedy, he said his heart went out to those who had lost their loved ones. |
