Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the secret of his party's return to power, third time in a row, was launching of welfare schemes by his government that touched the hearts of the people.

"I think the major reason of success for BJD is its pro-poor programmes, mostly Rs 2 a kg rice scheme for the poor people," he said, adding people felt that their day's meal was protected as the government provided rice at a cheap price.

Naveen had launched the cheap rice scheme barely five months before the elections when prices of essential commodities were sky-rocketing.

Besides, pension scheme for old and invalid under Madhubabu pension scheme, 'mo kudia' (housing scheme for people denied Indira Awas Yojana houses), Biju KBK Yojana and Biju Gram Jyoti Yojana won people's appreciation.

Patnaik was replying to the Motion of Thanks to the Governor for his address to the first session of the newly constituted assembly last night
