West Bengal government today said that it will adhere to the Supreme Court directive and will soon compensate those who were injured in police firing during the Nandigram violence in March 2007.
“There are total 159 injured. A list has been prepared, and is lying with the finance department for approval. Once it is cleared the government will make the payment as soon as possible,” said state Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh.
Stating that the state government has paid compensation of Rs two lakh to three rape victims and five lakh to the families of the dead, Ghosh said, “the injured will also get compensation of Rs one lakh very soon.”
An apex court bench comprising Justices R V Raveendran and A K Patnaik yesterday said despite the order directing the state to pay compensation to those injured, it has not been done.
