There is an interesting correlation between power theft and power cuts. The higher the percentage of energy stolen in a state, the more is the power cut in that region.

In an exercise done by the Power Finance Corporation, which would soon be a public database, it has ranked states on six parameters, in terms of the quality and quantity of power supply.

Business Standard lists the top five states on three parameters — average power cut per month, power theft as a percentage of supply and pending consumer complaints. This reflects the situation on the ground.

Haryana tops the list, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Assam that have the highest number of power outages.

These states also report a high rate of power thefts as well as consumer complaints.  The data, currently available on a mobile app, Urja, would soon be available as a web database.

The numbers have been provided by the states and their power distribution companies, or discoms.

Disclaimer: The details were taken from the beta version of the app, which is undergoing changes as the states continue to feed data. Some of the states are still to share their data so a broad ranking is being taken.
