The Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, is running a programme under which the flowers offered at religious places, including temples and mosques, are used for making products for sale.
Dewa Sharif is a world famous religious place associated with Sufi saint Haji Waris Ali Shah. People across all faith offer obeisance here.
"This scheme not only provides a stable livelihood medium to these women, but also solves the problem of disposal of substantial quantity of rotten flowers on a daily basis," CIMAP Director S P S Khanuja said.
He said there is growing interest among people for natural and herbal products around the world and trained women would not find difficulty in marketing their ware.
DBT Director Hamida Abdi and Khanuja also visited other areas and met flower growers in the district.
