To be in ICU for 2 days after complaining of chest pain within hours of arrest.

Former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, who was arrested and sent to jail on graft charges yesterday, has been admitted to hospital for complaints of chest pain. For the next two days, he will remain in the intensive care unit at the government-owned Sri Jayadeva Hospital.

The 68-year-old former Karnataka chief minister complained of chest pain within hours of being jailed — at around 1 am last night — and was immediately rushed to the hospital. He is said to be suffering from multiple health problems and mental stress. Hospital sources said a series of tests would be conducted on him. He has complained of high blood pressure and sugar levels, among other things.

Initial tests such as ECG, echo and angiogram revealed that Yeddyurappa’s health parameters were abnormal and required treatment, besides full rest.

“A five-member medical team has been formed to monitor Yeddyurappa’s health, conduct further tests and keep him in ICU, as he needs complete rest,” sources said.

Yesterday, Yeddyurappa’s counsel had told the Lokayukta Special Court the former CM was suffering from back pain and could not attend the court. The court rejected his bail application and issued an arrest warrant, as he was not present in the court. However, he surrendered in the evening and was sent to jail till October 22.

Judge N K Sudheendra Rao not only rejected Yeddyurappa’s bail plea, he also declined to exempt him from being present in the court on health grounds.

Chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda, along with senior cabinet members, visited the hospital to enquire about Yeddyurappa’s health and wish him a speedy recovery. Speaking to reporters, Gowda said the former CM looked very exhausted and was not able to speak. “Doctors have advised us not to tire him by talking to him frequently,” he said.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has demanded an immediate dissolution of the assembly, saying the ruling BJP has no moral right to continue in office, with many ministers facing criminal charges.

After meeting state governor H R Bhardwaj, Opposition leader Siddaramaiah said, “It is better the assembly is dissolved and fresh polls held. With many ministers, including Somanna, Yogeshwar, Murugesh Nirani and even Shobha Karandlaje facing criminal charges and its leader already in jail, the BJP government has no moral right to continue”.
