Governor Rameshwar Thakur administered the oath of office and secrecy to Yeddyurappa in front of Vidhana Soudha, where thousands of BJP supporters from across the state had converged to witness the function that lasted 20 minutes.
Yeddyurappa, who draped himself in a green shawl to strike a chord with the farming community, took the oath in the names of farmer and God. A vote of confidence will be sought during the legislature session to be held from June 4 to June 6.
Though the event was not extravagant, it had all the trappings of victory celebrations as the party workers waved saffron flags and burst crackers in joy. Senior BJP leaders including L K Advani, Rajnath Singh, Narendra Modi and M Venkaiah Naidu attended the ceremony.
Congress leaders Mallikarjun M Kharge, N Dharam Singh, D K Shiva Kumar and R V Deshpande also attended the function. However, no bigwig from the JD(S) attended it.
Along with Yeddyurappa, 29 legislators took oath as cabinet ministers. Part of Yeddyurappa's team were the five independents whose support is crucial for the BJP's survival in power.
