 "13 injured in CPI(M)-TMC clash")
Thirteen persons were today injured when CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress supporters clashed at Haroa in North 24 Parganas district, police said.
Supporters of the rival parties pelted stones and used lathis in the clash which took place near two polling booths at Brahmanchak area of Haroa.
The area falls under Minakha assembly segment of Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency where polling is underway. Superintendent of police Tanmoy Roychowdhury clarified there was no firing. The sub divisional police officer (SDPO) has rushed to the spot and CRPF personnel have been deployed.
The bombs, however, missed their mark and none was injured, police said. Purohit was Deputy Mayor of Kolkata from 2000-05 when BJP-Trinamool alliance was in power in Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Police has launched an investigation and is searching for the culprits, they said.
At Barisha under Kolkata south constituency CPI-M candidate Nandini Mukherjee was stopped and abuses were hurled at her when she was touring the area. The situation was brought under control by the police, who were called by Mukherjee herself.
While the CPI-M alleged that the Trinamool Congress were involved, TMC has denied any involvement in the incident. One RSP polling agent was attacked and wounded with a knife by alleged TMC worker at Canning West, which falls in Joynagar constituency, police said adding the man was stabbed in the neck and was rushed to hospital. TMC denied any involvement in this case. There were allegations of booth jamming at Bhangor east and Canning east under Jadavpur and Joynagar constituencies respectively by ruling TMC .
Jadavpur CPI-M candidate Sujon Chakraborty and SUCI candidate for Joynagar Barun Mondal, who is also its sitting MP, have complained to the Election Commission about large scale rigging in Bhangor east and Canning East. Congress candidate Arnob Roy too filed similar complaints with the EC.
They also complained that polling agents of their parties were not allowed to enter their respective booths by the TMC, the latter denied it saying the parties had not been to send agents.
Polling began at 11.30 AM, much after the scheduled time at Chaltaberia also in Joynagar constituency after the police lathicharged to quell a mob protesting against alleged lack of treatment outside a local hospital, where a boy was admitted after being hit by a car ferrying voting personnel. None was injured in the action, police added.
There were also multiple reports of dysfunctional EVMs from the two seats.
