The Election Commission (EC) today retained the candidature of 747 assembly seat aspirants and 98 Lok Sabha candidates after scrutiny of their documents as the deadline closed for withdrawal of candidature.
In the second phase, polls will be conducted on April 17 for 77 assembly seats and 11 Parliamentary constituencies in Odisha.
A total of 832 nominations were filed for the second phase assembly seats, out of which 48 got rejected during scrutiny while 37 candidates withdrew their candidature. The EC finally declared 747 nominations as valid.For Lok Sabha polls, out of the 105 nomination papers, 101 were found valid after scrutiny and three candidates decided to opt out, according to a press release issued by office of Chief Electoral Officer (CEO).
The CEO's office also said that, as more than 16 contestants are contesting in three assembly seats- Ekamra-Bhubaneswar (20), Maroda (24) and Rairangpur (17), additional electronic voting machines (EVM) will be provided to those constituencies.
An EVM can contain names of 15 candidates and one button for recently introduced NOTA (None of The Above) provision.

Taking into account the valid candidates already declared for first phase polls, a total of 199 candidates will contest the polls for 21 Lok Sabha seats of the state while 1,415 candidates are in the fray for 147 assembly seats.
