Opposition Congress fail to capitalize on anti-incumbency

This may come as surprise for the Aam Admi Party(AAP) as finally it managed to open their account in the country by bagging four seats in Punjab as opposition Congress party in the state failed to capitalize on the anti-incumbency factor, according to election commission data till 6.45. While the ruling SAD-BJP alliance managed to get five seats.

Congress was leading in three seats followed by SAD-BJP alliance(1 seat). In last Lok Sabha Election 2009, Congress bagged 8 seats while the ruling SAD-BJP alliance got 5 seats.

Among the major losers were Union Minister Ambika Soni, Arun Jaitley(BJP), State Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress legislature party chief and sitting MLA from Abohar Sunil Jakhar, Union Minister Preneet Kaur. The fielding of heavyweights by the Congress couldn’t worked out in their favour.

On the other hand wife of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Harsimrat Badal contesting on SAD ticket defeated deputy CM Nephew Manpreet Badal by 19,395 seats. Also, Bollywood star Vinod Khanna from BJP defeated the State Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa is contesting from Gurdaspur.

This year, Punjab registered marginally higher voting in 2014 polls compared to 2009 polls, according to revised report of Election Commission. Punjab clocked 70.89% poling in the state’s 13 Lok Sabha Constituencies which went to polls on April 30, a marginally higher than the 2009 Lok Sabha polls when the turnout was 70%.

The state has 19.50 million voters. Also, in 2014 polls females voting%age was slightly higher than males compared to 2009 Lok Sabha elections. The state has 19.50 million voters.

Further, 253 candidates were in fray this year contesting for 13 Lok Sabha seats compared to 218 in the last Lok Sabha elections. Also, this time, 19 women candidates are contesting compared to 13 in the last Lok Sabha Polls.
