As unknown supporters dotted skyline of Bhopal with posters of BJP’s patriarch LK Advani this morning, a strong buzz gripped the anticipating capital town that his candidature for Bhopal is confirmed. The veteran leader has left the option open earlier last week when party released a list of 24 candidates from Madhya Pradesh. Advani is reportedly not attending the ongoing meeting of the BJP's election committee, is also an indication that a decision that he will contest from Bhopal is almost confirmed.
If Advani chooses the Madhya Pradesh capital he is most likely to say goodbye to Gandhinagar (Gujarat) that he has represented in Parliament since 1991 except between 1996 and 1998 following his implications in “Hawala” scam.
The sitting Member of Parliament from Bhopal and ex-chief minister of Madhya Pradesh Kailash Joshi has opted out to stay away from this election but has strongly recommended that Advani should contest the seat. “Party sources have told me that he would contest from Bhopal also. Most probably a formal announcement is expected soon,” Joshi said here.
“He is not attending the election committee meeting though it is politically correct but is also a clear indication that he will be agreed to contest from Bhopal,” party sources told BS adding, “One must not mistake his coming to Bhopal for other reasons but it will maximize party’s gain in Madhya Pradesh.”
Last year, the 87 year old had opposed his party’s decision to name Modi as prime ministerial candidate but later he came out of sulk and endorsed the party decision.
Party sources have also clued BS, “If Advani comes to Bhopal, his strong supporter Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Senior leader Sushma Swaraj who is contesting Vidisha seats few furlong away would make a perfect prospective alley to form a “possible front” to challenge Modi if a “muddy” post-poll scenario emerges.
