The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to maintain the new government at the Centre should deal with issue of any fresh banking licences.
Party sources say there has not been any change in the BJP’s position that both the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Election Commission (EC) should leave the task of issuing licences to the new government at the Centre.
“We have said earlier and still maintain that it is an issue for the next government. We will closely scrutinise any move by RBI in this direction if it were to happen prior to formation of the 16th Lok Sabha,” said a party source.
The committee had opposed granting of banking licence to corporate houses.
Sinha, a former finance minister, had said the BJP doesn’t want the RBI to issue any new licences on the advice of a caretaker government. He has been of the view that the RBI should frame a policy in consultation with the new government.
