To dispel the impression that seniors were shying away from contesting the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on Friday fielded political heavyweights such as Ambika Soni, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Manas Bhunia.

Soni, a Rajya Sabha member, has been reluctant to fight a Lok Sabha election. She has been nominated from Anandpur Sahib. Amarinder has been fielded from Amritsar to take on BJP leader Arun Jaitley.

Former West Bengal Congress chief and former minister Manas Bhunia has been fielded from Ghatal, while Abdul Mannan has been given a ticket from Sreerampur. Reknowned painter Samir Aich has been given a ticket from Jadavpur. Mani Shankar Aiyar will fight the polls from Tamil Nadu.
