A day after the Congress recorded its worst ever electoral performance, Congress leaders in the capital preferred to stay confined to their homes as BJP’s Prime Minister in waiting Narendra Modi went on a victory lap in the city. Left with little cover as the Congress was routed in the seven seats in the capital as well and AAP supplanting them as the runner up in all seven, Congress leaders now are preferring to wait and watch as the crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meets on Monday.
For the party which is facing as one called it an “existential crisis”, a CWC called to take stock of the political situation in the aftermath of results, was more the need of the hour than a Parliamentary board meeting. Only after the CWC, in the next few days, will the 44 new MPs be called to the capital.
Meanwhile, speculation is rife that Rahul Gandhi could offer his resignation as Party Vice President during the CWC meet, with some sections speculating that party President Sonia Gandhi too could offer to resign.
Infact, one of the clear signs that have been visible post the defeat, is the resurgence of Congress senior leaders aligned to the Congress President Sonia Gandhi; who were sidelined after Rahul Gandhi took over the day to day functioning of the party.
There are sure to be voices mostly that of seniors that are likely to speak out at the CWC on May 19 on several issues including faulty ticket distribution and giving pride of place to non- political faces.
While fingers have been pointed at the Gandhi scion in the past; after the Congress rout in the UP Assembly polls, the adverse results in the four Assembly polls in December last year, what makes this third time rout stand out as one leader put it, “If we don’t take drastic actions now, the Congress is sure to be wiped out as a political force.”
