A day after the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid appealed to Muslims to support Congress in the Lok Sabha polls, BSP supremo Mayawati today said voting for the party would only be a waste as it is already out of the race.

"I want to appeal to my Muslims brothers not to vote for Congress. Supporting Congress will be a waste of your vote as the party's condition has deteriorated not only in Uttar Pradesh but across the country," Mayawati said at a BSP rally at Kavi Nagar's Ramlila Ground here.

"Muslims should also not vote for either BJP or Samajwadi Party, instead they should support BSP, which cares for them in the general elections," she added.

Yesterday, Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari had appealed to Muslims to vote for Congress, terming BSP as an "opportunistic party". He had also said supporting regional outfits will be a "waste of vote".

Mayawati appealed to the Muslims to ensure the Ghaziabad BSP candidate's victory by a huge margin so that Congress nominee (Raj Babbar) loses his security deposit.

Slamming both Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Mayawati said, "Congress is contesting these elections on the support of its 'Yuvraj' (Rahul Gandhi) without announcing his name as prime ministerial candidate. On the other side, BJP has made such person (Narendra Modi) its prime ministerial candidate whose government is always questioned for Godhra Riots in 2002."

Mayawati said that "we should prevent BJP from coming to power as if such person (Modi) becomes the PM... Communal riots will then be erupt anytime and the country would witness several riots".

The BSP supremo also appealed to Dalits, Muslims, Brahmins and Sikh to support BSP so that "we can prevent communal powers from capturing power at the Centre".

Taking a dig at BJP, she said when it was ruling at the Centre for six years, it didn't work for the welfare of the people and failed to develop Uttar Pradesh.

Demanding a separate state of Western Uttar Pradesh, she said that BSP had written to the Centre in this regard, but the latter did nothing. She also alleged that the SP-led government was not developing the areas which fall in western Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati criticised the Samajwadi Party over the law and order situation. "When BSP was in power, the situation of law and order was good. But as SP came to power the law and order has now deteriorated... We have seen Muzaffarnagar and Shamli riots in which hundreds of innocent people had to sacrifice their lives," she said.
