Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi on Monday told voters he was happy that the party is fighting alone in Tamil Nadu and it would come to power.
In his first visit after the elections were announced, he was addressing voters in Ramanathapuram, around 500 km from here.
He said, “I am quite happy the Congress is fighting alone after such a long time. I am proud to see our workers all charged up and ready to fight the election under the Congress. Now we will not have to compromise and we are going to fight not only the Lok Sabha elections but we are going to fight to come to power in Tamil Nadu with a Congress government here,” said Gandhi.
It may be noted that Modi's comment that the regional parties in Tamil Nadu are only fighting each other without looking at the growth of the State, comparing it with Gujarat model of growth, was refuted by both the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), in the recent days.
Gandhi also urged the people to vote for a pro-poor, secular government and not for the parties which would divide people in the name of religion. He added that the country has to focus on creating jobs and the country should start manufacturing for its needs rather than depending on China for every products.
Listing out the various achievements of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in the last 10 years, he said that "The first thing we are going to do when we get back to the centre is to pass the women's bill". He added that the future plans also include setting up of 2,000 women police stations and adding more women employees in the police force.
He added that the Congress is committed to solve the issues of the Indian firshermen, while speaking about the issues faced by the Tamil fishermen.
