Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Tuesday said he would take the responsibility for the future of Telangana if people voted him to power in Delhi.

“Nobody is going to stop the BJP from coming to power in this election. But if you too give all the seats of the region to the party, there would be no looking back for you thereafter,” Modi said addressing a rally in Nizamabad town, about 170 km away from Hyderabad.

The party is contesting nine Lok Sabha and 47 Assembly seats in the Telangana region, apart from six Lok Sabha and 16 Assembly seats in Seemandhra, in alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

Comparing Telangana with a new-born baby that needs a lot of care and nurturing, Modi said it was very important for the people of Telangana  to choose the right party both in the state and at the Centre as things would go very bad if those in power in Delhi were not empathetic to their needs.

“You know what the mother-son (Sonia and Rahul) government did to you. They reacted to the demand for the separate statehood only after 1,100 people sacrificed their lives. Their sacrifices will go waste if you vote for the Congress party,” Modi said while stating that no one can claim the credit for the formation of the new state of Telangana except its people.

He also referred to an incident in the early 80s when then AP chief minister T Anjaiah was publicly snubbed by Rajiv Gandhi. The same fate had befallen former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao in the hands of the Gandhi family, he said while praising the ‘Telugu spirit’.

Referring to the problems of turmeric farmers of Nizamabad district, Modi criticised the Congress-led government for not encouraging the value-added industry based on turmeric even though people in the US got patent over its medicinal properties.  “Lal Bahadur Sastri gave us the slogan- Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan. The Congress has turned it into  Mar (die) Jawan, Mar  Kisan in its 10- year rule,” he said.
