 "JD(S) ropes in ex-judge; 22 candidates for Mysore")
After tapping every other possible successful candidate, including veteran Congress leader C K Jaffer Sharief, and failing in its bid, Janata Dal (S) has been able to finally find a surprise nominee for the Mysore-Kodagu Lok Sabha seat.
Former Karnataka Upa Lokayukta Justice K Chandrashekharaiah today filed his nomination papers on behalf of the party, besides Aam Aadmi Pary nominee M V Padmamma, the last day for entering the April 17 poll fray. They handed over nomination papers to Deputy Commissioner C Shikha, who is also the district election officer.
Justice Chandrashekharaiah filed two sets of papers, while Padmamma, a retired bank official, one set today.
Janata Dal (S) which had set its hopes high of fielding Sharief after making him quit the Congress, failed in its bid when the former Railway Minister communicated from Mecca to JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda his intention not to enter the fray on behalf of JD(S), leaving the party in a quandary once again.
It tried to persuade its local legislators who too showed disinclination and ultimately two names of Justice Chandrasekharaiah and educationist Taj Mohmmed Khan were in circulation yesterday. Today, it could finally prevail upon the former Upa Lokayukta.
Others who have filed their nominations include Adagur H Vishwanath of Congress (4 sets), Pratap Simha of BJP (4 sets), S P Mahadevappa of JD (U), Rathi Poovaiah of Karunada Party, D S Nirvanappa of CPML (Kodagu), C Mohan Kumar of BSP, Thimmegowda of Sarva Janata Party, K Chandrashekar of Democratic Prajakranthi Socialist Party, Eshwar Thoremavu of RPI, D Eswara of Republican Party of India, Gnanaprakash, Bhojanna N Somaiah, M Khaleel, Srinivas, P S Yadurappa, D S Kumaraswamy, M S Praveen, M S Sampath, former Deputy Mayor G Lingaiah, Gurumallesh and Akheel Ahmed, all independents.
The scrutiny will be taken up tomorrow at 11 am and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 29 till 3 pm. Public campaign is to end by 6 pm on April 15. Election will take place on April 17 from 7 am to 6 pm.
