Contrary to popular belief that the Kuruba community in Karnataka would stand solidly behind Congress as the party has made their community man Siddaramaiah chief minister of the state, a big chunk of Kurubas in Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency has come out openly in support of the BJP.
There is a feeling among a section of Kurubas in the constituency that Siddaramaiah has been indifferent to the members of Kuruba community in North Karnataka and that he has more interest in promoting his Ahinda associates. The fact that efforts by another Kuruba leader Lohit Naiker, son of former KPCC president D K Naiker, to get a Congress ticket for Dharwad Lok Sabha seat were not supported by Siddaramaiah has irked a section of Kuruba community in the region. As a result, the Kuruba community had to be content with only two tickets from Congress.
At a convention organised at Dharwad on Monday, several Kuruba leaders expressed their loyalty to BJP and called upon the community members to support Prahlad Joshi who is in the fray.
Shagoti said it was during BJP regime in Karnataka that Kaginele Authority was established and Kanaka temple in Kaginele of Haveri district was developed. “While CM Siddaramaiah just speaks, the BJP has done several good things for Kurubas” Shagoti said.
Professor Ma Nagaraj, a former KPSC member said, the people would vote considering the issues of national importance and it would be degrading the voters if you count on them only on caste lines” he said. Rajeshwari Salagatti, Bharat Wodeyar, Mallanagouda Patil and others also spoke and expressed their support to BJP.
BJP candidate Prahlad Joshi, MLA Arvind Bellad, former legislators Seema Masuti and Mohan Limbikai among others also spoke and explained the policies and programmes of the BJP. They said the party believed in all inclusive growth without leaving out any section of the society. Priority would be given for uplifting the downtrodden and backwards, they said.
Meanwhile, members of the Kuruba community took out a rally in support of BJP candidate Prahlad Joshi in Dharwad from Kadapa Maidan. The procession went through the main roads of the city and culminated in a public meeting at Kadapa Maidan.
