Tamil Nadu recorded 73.67% polling during the Lok Sabha elections held in the state on 24 April. It may be noted in the 2009 Lok Sabha election, percentage of votes polled was 72.98%.
Dharmapuri constituency recorded the highest turnout at 81.07%, while Chennai South reported the lowest at 60.4%.
With 42 candidates, Chennai South Lok Sabha constituency had the maximum number of contestants. The candidates included BJP leader La Ganesan. Chennai North and Chennai Central (where former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran is contesting from) recorded 63.95% and 61.49% respectively.
All 39 constituencies in TN went to polls on 24 April. Total electorate in the state was 5.50 crore, including 80 lakh new voters. Number of candidates was 845.

The 1984 elections, which were held after the assassination of Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, reported 73% voting.
During 1998 and 1999 elections the turnaround was around 58% and in 2009 Lok Sabha election the turnout was 73%.
The lowest turnout reported in the state was during 1956 Lok Sabha election, which recorded only 47.8% voting and polling in the assembly election during the same year was 46.6%.
The 2011 assembly election reported an all time high of 78%.
