Odisha's tribal dominated Kandhamal district known for its poverty, will see some crorepati candidates vying for the Parliamentary constituency in the ensuing polls.
The Kandhamal Lok Sabha seat consisting of Kandhamal, Ganjam, Boudh and Nayagarh districts, has six candidates in the fray from the Congress, ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and an independent. But the contest is expected to be polarised between the BJD and the Congress.
Topping the wealth chart among candidates is Hemendra Kumar Singh contesting on a BJD ticket after recently defecting to the ruling party from Congress. Singh, the royal scion of Nayagarh has declared assets worth Rs 48.72 crore, including that of his spouse Prayusha Rajeshwari Singh.
Singh's challenger for the Kandhamal seat is Harihar Karan fielded by the Congress.
Karan, a former minister, has shown his total assets at Rs 9.62 crore.
According to affidavit filed by Karan, his total moveable assets are worth Rs 71.44 lakh whereas his spouse has assets of Rs 66.20 lakh. Together, the duo have immoveable assets valued at Rs 8.25 crore.
Other candidates in the race with declared properties inlcude Sukanta Panigrahi-BJP (Rs 5.80 lakh) Narendra Mohanty- AAP (Rs 9.58-lakh) Rama Nayak of BSP (Rs 11.37 lakh) and independent candidate Lambodar Kanhar, Rs 13 lakh.

Singh's affidavit reveals he has moveable assets totaling to Rs 11.17 crore while his wife's assets are valued at Rs 2.48 crore. In addition to bank deposits and investments, the duo are in possession of 13 vehicles. The couple also has jewellery and other valuable assets worth Rs 1.78 crore. Singh is in possession of immovable assets around Rs 35.07 crore.
