 "Rural segment turnout trumps urban in Mysore")
Final figures show the percentage of polling in Mysore-Kodagu Lok Sabha constituency stands at 67.21, 8.33 per cent higher than in the 2009 general elections when it was 58.88 per cent.
Intensive systematic voters’ education and electoral participation (SVEEP) conducted by the district authorities throughout the district has resulted in higher voter turnout.
Against 1,653,991 voters, 973,878 voters had exercised their franchise last time, while 1,156,799 have voted this time against the total electorate of 1,721,197. As can be seen from the figures, the number of enrolled voters has seen a rise by 67,206 this time compared to last time.The turnout of voters in the rural constituencies of Periyapatna (77.85 per cent), Hunsur (75.70 per cent) and Chamundeswari (70.84 per cent) is higher as usual than the urban constituencies of Krishnaraja (58.49 per cent), Chamaraja (58.27 per cent) and Narasimharaja (56.10 per cent). The voter turnout in the two constituencies of Kodagu that form part of the Lok Sabha constituency is also comparatively good, with Madikeri registering 73.85 per cent and Virajpet 69.90 per cent. The predominantly Muslim populated Narasimharaja segment has registered the lowest turnout among the eight segments.
Parties and their activists are calculating the impact of rise in voting percentage on their candidate’s future. While there are 15 candidates, against 10 in fray last time, the contest is seen chiefly between the Congress and the BJP, whose candidates are sitting MP A H Viswanath and new entrant Pratap Simha, respectively.
Polling went off more or less peacefully barring a minor clash between Congress and SDPI workers in Shanthinagar in Mysore resulting in injuries to one person and arrest of about a dozen. Neighbouring Chamarajanagar and Mandya constituencies too have witnessed higher percentage of voting.
The EVMs, which hold the future of candidates, are kept at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering in Manasa Gangotri campus with tight security all around.
Counting will take place on May 16.

Although Chamundeswari constituency has the highest number of voters among the eight constituencies (255,844), only 181,242 have voted. However, the turnout is comparatively better this time. In the 2009 election, the turnout was 62.80. The voting percentage in Hunsur and Per-iyapatna was 70.54 and 73.35, respectively.
