A total of 350 million votes have been polled till phase 6 of the ongoing elections, a number which is 135 million more than the same period in the previous election.
215 million voters had cast their votes uptill phase 6 of the polls last time, according to a Motilal Oswal Securities Limited India Politics report.
“This increase in number of voters is more than the total number of votes secured by the majority party (Congress) in 2009 General elections. Voter turnout till Phase 6 is 66% v/s 57.5% in 2009 for same number of seats (an increase of 8.5%),” said the April 25th report authored by Ashish Gupta and Dipankar Mitra.
“There was a sharp increase in voter turnout, particularly for key swing states for NDA - Uttar Pradesh saw an increase of 15pp from 2009 levels and had 62% of the voters polling in 2014 (highest-ever), Bihar stood at 57% (13pp increase), Jharkhand at 61% (10pp increase), Karnataka at 67% (8pp increase) and Maharashtra at 58% (7pp increase),” it said.
The report added that the Congress and BJP polled 119 million and 78 million votes respectively in 2009.
