Chhattisgarh has developed a bizarre political addiction---the son of chief minister from the region has finally opted politics as a career.

With Chief Minister Raman Singh’s son Abhishek entering into electoral politics by contesting from Rajnandgaon Lok Sabha constituency, the state has set a record. The politician who has been the state’s chief minister has handed over the baton of his political empire to his son.

Just 14 years old, Chhattisgarh has seen only two chief ministers since its inception in November 2000. Senior Congress leader Ajit Jogi is the first chief minister of Chhattisgarh and his son Amit is now an MLA from Marwahi assembly segment.

Abhishek, who holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, left his job in Mumbai to help his father. He was the chief manager of Raman Singh in his home constituency of Rajnandgaon and home town of Kawardha during the state polls. The party performed better in both the constituencies.

Ironically, the politicians who hailed from Chhattisgarh region and had occupied the coveted post of chief minister in the erstwhile undivided Madhya Pradesh stand no exception. Their wards too had jumped into politics and had become lawmakers.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) Treasurer Motilal Vora was the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh when Chhattisgarh was part of it. His son Arun is incumbent MLA from the Durg assembly constituency. Similarly, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shyama Charan Shukla’s son Amitesh had also preferred to make politics as his career. He had been a state minister in Chhattisgarh.

Though the father could not make it to the chief minister’s post, wards of key state leaders from both Congress and BJP in Chhattisgarh had emerged as the political heir of their father.

Former state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel's son Umesh had entered politics and represented his father’s Kharsia seat in state legislative assembly. Mahendra Karma’s son Deepak is contesting from Bastar Lok Sabha constituency as Congress candidate taking on Dinesh Kashyap, son of Baliram Kashyap who has been the founder of BJP in Bastar.

Former union minister Dilip Singh Judeo’s son Yudhveer Singh had been an MLA and now represented the state in Rajya Sabha. Vidya Charan Shukla’s daughter however is not lucky as other. Her dream to join electoral politics could not take shape as Congress denied her Lok Sabha ticket.
