Launching a scathing attack on Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi today exhorted people to throw out the BJD government in the state which has been in power for last 15 years.
Though Modi has visited the state four times in two months for campaigning, this is the first time he sought an end to the rule of BJD, which is predicted to return to power by different opinion polls. He was addressing a public meeting in Balasore.
Addressing a meeting at Keonjhar later, Modi, who always refers to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi as 'Shehzade', used the same metaphor for Naveen. "Biju Patnaik ruled Odisha and now his Shehzade is in power", he and called up the people to end family rule both at the Centre and the state.
At a rally at Sambalpur on his second trip, Modi was completely silent on Patnaik and his government, which had raised speculation about a possible BJP-BJD tie-up in the post-poll scenario.
Referring to the heavy turnout of voters (75 %) in the first phase of polls in Odisha yesterday, Modi said, it was people's love for BJP which prompted them to come to polling booths in large numbers.
"I feel a wind of change here. Odisha will script a new history. The state would spring a miracle", he said.
Raking up the old cliche that Odisha is poor despite having rich mineral resources, he said, "See how blessed Odisha is. But, the leaders here could not manage what God has given and the governments here have ruined things for people".
"Fifteen years have passed but what they (the state government) have given to you. Does your CM meet you? Do you need such people?", Modi asked the crowd.
He termed the current election as the 'farewell' poll for BJD government at the state and UPA government at the Centre and urged the people to form a stable BJP government in the state, promising that Oidsha will be changed like Gujarat.
Stating that the BJD government is deep in corruption, he said, these don't come to the fore as they are overshadowed by the bigger scams in the Centre.
"Sometimes when there are two injuries, attention goes to the larger wound. That is why we don't see corruption here which is dangerous. It hides behind the scams at Delhi", he lashed.
"You have given madam Sonia 10 years in the Centre and this government 15 years, give me 60 months, there will be unprecedented change," he added.
He congratulated the voters for voting in large numbers on Thursday and exuded confidence that Congress would fail to open its account in state in the Lok Sabha polls.
Modi later addressed two more public meetings at Koenjhar and Talcher in the day.
