BJP retains Tripura, piggy-backs on regional parties to secure Nagaland, Meghalaya

The ruling BJP managed to notch-up a morale-boosting win on its 'Mission Northeast' on Thursday by retaining Tripura emphatically, despite anti-incumbency and newcomer Tipra Motha playing spoilers to its party, while also piggy-backing to power in Nagaland on Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP's shoulder.

In Meghalaya, it was poised to be part of the ruling dispensation again as a junior partner, given that chief minister Conrad Sangma's NPP has fallen short of majority while winning the lion's share of 26 seats in the 60-member assembly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking after the declaration of results, credited BJP's consistent wins in states, including the northeast, "to a 'Triveni' (triumrate) of work and work culture" of its governments and its workers' commitment to service, the PTI reported.

BJP is leaving behind all labels; we will form govt in Kerala too: PM Modi

Congress always followed vote bank politics and ignored northeastern states. This thinking of calling northeastern states "small" has always cost the country its development.

BJP has broken all stereotypes about it. They called us "baniya party", "middle-class party" and out of touch in villages. But first in Goa and now in Christian dominant north-east, we are getting rid of all these labels.

Election results 2023: BJP alliance likely to return in Tripura, Nagaland; trailing in Meghalaya

The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies -- IPFT and NDPP -- were likely to retain power in Tripura and Nagaland, as per the latest trends post the initial rounds of counting in these two Northeast states.

However, the BJP, which is leading in 3 seats in Meghalaya, is likely to fall short of securing the majority mark on its own and might have to seek post-poll alliances if it is to form the government in the state.

We have given a new development model to the nation. We believe in development for all. We prioritise the nation and keep citizens first. We have also given a new political model to the country.

The BJP won in Tripura for the second straight term by securing 32 seats in the 60-member state assembly, for which elections were held on February 16. According to the results declared by the Election Commission on Thursday, the tribal-based Tipra Motha Party (TMP), which for the first time contested 42 seats on its own, emerged as the second largest party securing 13 seats. The CPI-M won 11 seats while the Congress bagged three.

The ruling National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya won 20 seats, and was leading in five other constituencies, the Election Commission said on Thursday as results of 52 of the 59 assembly seats that went to polls on February 27 were declared. The United Democratic Party (UDP) bagged 11 constituencies, while the Congress won five seats. The Voice of the People Party (VPP) and the Trinamool Congress won four seats each, while the Mamata Banerjee-led party was ahead in one constituency. The Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP), the People's Democratic Front and the BJP won two seats each, while the saffron party was leading in one constituency. Two Independent candidates also emerged victorious.

Prime Minister Narednra Modi on Thursday said the BJP's win in Tripura is a vote for progress and stability and asserted that the party's government in the state will continue to boost its growth trajectory. Thanking people of the state, he added, "I am proud of all Tripura BJP karyakartas for their spectacular efforts at the grassroots."

Nagaland political stalwart and its longest serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio is set to assume office as chief minister for a fifth consecutive term after a convincing win for his party and its ally, the BJP. Together, the two parties have secured 33 seats in the 60-member Nagaland assembly.

The BJP-IPFT alliance won 31 seats in the 60-member Tripura assembly, securing its return to power in the northeastern state for the second time in a row. According to the Election Commission website, the BJP bagged 30 seats while the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) got one. The saffron party is leading in two more seats.

Manik Saha is all set to return as Tripura's chief minister for a second term as he defeated Congress's veteran leader Ashish Kumar Saha, by a margin of 1,257 votes from Town Bardowali despite detractors within his own party predicting a tough time for him. From joining the saffron party in 2016 to being appointed chief minister last year in a brand renewal exercise, it has been a short but upward journey for the 69-year-old dental surgeon-turned-politician.

Counting of votes, polled in the February Assembly elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland, began on Thursday morning under three-tier security measures, including central paramilitary forces, officials said. Poll officials said that prohibitory orders have been promulgated in and around all counting centres as a precautionary measure. The Election Commission has appointed a General Observer for each Assembly constituency while several other officials, including micro-observers and counting supervisors, were appointed for the counting process. Officials said that metal detectors and CCTVs were installed in each counting hall and the entire counting process was being videographed.
