Lok Sabha election result 2019 LIVE updates: Congress President Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation taking moral responsibility of the defeat. However, it was rejected by Congress leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday was elected as the leader of the NDA Parliamentary Party in the presence of senior BJP leaders LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.

SAD's Parkash Singh Badal proposed Narendra Modi's name as the leader of NDA Parliamentary Party. JDU Chief Nitish Kumar and Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray endorsed the proposal.

Earlier in the day, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) "unanimously and in one word" rejected Rahul Gandhi's resignation, in spite of his insisting on quitting. "We need Rahul Gandhi to guide us in these challenging times," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reporters after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee.

Party leaders praised the 48-year-old and authorised him to go for a complete overhaul of the party.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP and its allies won a huge mandate of over 350 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha to continue for a second term.

Earlier, Maharashtra state unit chief Ashok Chavan said Congress' defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls was a "collective responsibility" and not that of party chief Rahul Gandhi alone. "The campaign was a collective responsibility. Rahul Gandhi worked hard and led from the front. All senior leaders in states who hold positions in the state units should quit, so that a new team can take over. My colleagues and I are ready to resign due to the poor show of the Congress in Maharashtra," Chavan told reporters here.

The Election Commission today submitted a list of newly-elected MPs to President Ram Nath Kovind, an official statement said, setting in motion the process for constituting the 17th Lok Sabha.

Earlier in the day, the President dissolved the 16th Lok Sabha on the recommendation of the Union Cabinet.

Nearly 80% candidates lost security deposit in LS polls in J&K

Barring the Ladakh parliamentary constituency, majority of the contesting candidates lost their security deposit in five other Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir where 51 of them even failed to get one per cent of the valid votes.

 

The BJP retained three parliamentary seats of Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh, while the National Conference swept the polls in the Kashmir valley, winning all the three seats of Srinagar, Anantnag and Baramulla.

 

A total of 79 candidates were in the fray for the six parliamentary seats, but 63 of them lost their security deposit of Rs 25,000 and Rs 12,500 (for schedule tribe and scheduled caste candidates) as they failed to get the minimum required one-sixth (16.67 per cent) of the total polled valid votes, according to official data by the Election Commission of India.

 

The Ladakh parliamentary seat which was won by 33-year-old BJP leader Jamyang Tsering Namgyal -- the youngest among the six winners from the state -- was the only constituency where rest of the three candidates managed to save their deposits.

Lok Sabha election defeat collective responsibility, not Rahul's alone: Ashok Chavan

The Congress' massive defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls was a "collective responsibility" and not that of party chief Rahul Gandhi alone, Maharashtra state unit chief Ashok Chavan said Saturday.

 

Chavan added that there was no question of accepting Gandhi's resignation as party chief.

 

Chavan himself lost from Nanded Lok Sabha seat to BJP's Pratap Chiklikar.
