Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday suggested interlinking of rivers as a way to solve scarcity of water and the problem of floods in parts of Haryana. Modi, addressing a series of public rallies in the state, also elaborated on his vision of ‘Team India’ as he sought a majority for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Haryana Assembly. The PM said only a BJP government in the state could bring greater cohesion between the Centre and the state government.

Modi addressed public rallies in Rohtak, Mahendragarh, Sonepat and Jagadhri. The PM, in a reference to the geographical proximity of Delhi and Haryana, said the Centre and a state might be located near each other, but little can be achieved if the two are not on the same wavelength.

“Mujhe pass-pass wali sarkar nahin, saath-saath wali sarkar chahiye (I want a government that concurs),” he said, exhorting people to give the BJP majority in the Assembly. Modi has frequently talked about his vision of federalism and ‘Team India’, where the PM and chief ministers work as a team for the development of India. (PROFILE OF CANDIDATES)

On Wednesday the PM asked the people of Haryana, during his rally in Mahendragarh, not to elect a government “whose nostrils flare or which vomits at the mere mention of Delhi”. “Elect a government that has affection for (the government in) Delhi, while Delhi also has  goodwill for that state government,” said Modi.

At Mahendragarh, on the Rajasthan-Haryana border, Modi said he would solve the problem of water scarcity for farmers by inter-linking rivers. He said his government’s proposal to do so would solve the problem of flooding and water scarcity.

The PM yet again reached out to Dalits of the state. He wished people on the occasion of Valmiki Jayanti and talked about atrocities on Dalits, particularly women, in the state. “I give a commitment to my dalit brothers of Haryana that my government is for the deprived and backward communities, not for the rich,” said Modi, asking people to bring an end to 25 years of “nepotistic and corrupt politics” in Haryana run by “just five families”. In Sonepat, Modi said a metro train should connect the city with Delhi.
