A former Congressman, J D Rymbai, has been elected as the United Democratic Party (UDP) legislature party leader after former Chief Minister Donkupar Roy resigned from the post amid indications of realignment of political forces in Meghalaya.

Rymbai, also a former chief minister who had quit the Congress and joined the UDP 18 months ago, was elected to the post late yesterday night after Roy resigned admitting his failure in keeping party MLAs intact.

Two legislators of the regional party Ampareen Lyngdoh and Nimarson Momin had earlier resigned from the party and sent their resignations to the assembly speaker alleging inept leadership.

Roy, however, will remain the UDP president.

“I have resigned as the UDP Legislature Party leader as I accept moral responsibility for my failure to hold the party MLAs intact. I feel that I should have resigned much earlier, maybe after the resignation of two party legislators,” Roy said.

UDP insiders said the two UDP legislators who had resigned from the party had sent feelers to the party pressing for a change of leadership in the legislature party before they could withdraw their resignation letters submitted recently to Assembly Speaker Bindo M Lanong.
