Coming back strong after being acquitted in the disproportionate assets case — a case where she was sent to jail for some time — in May 2015, J Jayalalithaa has not looked back.

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister will look to be re-elected from her party’s stronghold Dr Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency in the heart of Chennai city. Jayalalithaa or ‘Amma’ as she is referred by her supporters will seek a fifth term as the chief minister of the state.

In a bid to accelerate the momentum in winning the polls, the AIADMK chief released a manifesto full of freebies, which promised free mobiles, laptops with internet, free electricity, among others.

A significant thing in this fight is that no ruling party has come to power after serving one term in Tamil Nadu. It always has been swinging between the All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Will Amma be able to break this jinx?
