The leader of opposition till February 2016, ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth is pitched as the likely ‘kingmaker’ in case there is a hung assembly in the state.
The actor had won polls on earlier occasions, with the most recent being Rishivandhiyam constituency in the state in 2011.
However, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) chief decided to shift from Rishivandhiyam and is all set to contest from Ulundurpet for the current assembly elections. His strength, which he could play up on, lies in the fact that he has brought an area which was largely neglected in the limelight. The region is said to be lacking basic facilities like clean drinking water and quality medical care. These may be used to plug holes in sitting MLA’s work in the constituency.
However, his only and the biggest roadblock would be an ongoing rebellion in his party, where 10 members have openly batted for alliance with the DMK and not the People’s Welfare Front (PWF).
Will this election turn out to be a skipper leading from the front?
