One of the under-developed states in India, Bihar is also a fierce political battleground involving strong regional parties.

Fighting the pandemic, Bihar was a net loser compared to India, as joblessness in the state was nearly twice the national average. Unemployment had come under control at the beginning of the recently-ended tenure of Nitish Kumar.

From late 2017, unemployment in Bihar has remained worse than the national figure, reflecting the income stress in the state.

The human development index has been steadily improving, but also shows that the gap between Bihar and the national HDI rose under the Lalu regime. Under the JD (U) and BJP rule, Bihar has largely caught up with India.

The three sub-indices show education improved under Nitish Kumar’s rule. Income index, too, is getting better at a faster rate than before. Health index seems to be on a steady path.
