The effective net non-performing loans (NPL) of Indian banks could be double than the reported figure though the asset quality has improved over the years, according to Fitch Ratings.

The reported NPL of the banking system is over Rs 70,000 crore. If the NPL of financial institutions too are included, the figure could go up to over Rs 1 lakh crore, the credit rating agency said.
