Banks in Punjab and Haryana have geared up to implement the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.
Having already covered over 95 per cent households in rural and urban areas under the existing financial inclusion plan in Punjab and Haryana, bankers expect the remaining households in these two states to be covered soon. In order to achieve the target in time, the banks have been allocated wards in urban areas and sub -service areas in rural areas by the convenor bank in these states.
According to the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC), in Punjab, 95.72 per cent of rural households were covered as on June 30, 2014, under the financial inclusion plan. In urban areas, it was 95.55 per cent. According to the 2001 Census, 150,000 households in rural area and 93,000 households in urban areas have not yet been covered.
In Haryana, under the existing financial inclusion plan 95.25 per cent households in rural areas and 98.28 per cent households in urban areas have been covered. About 130,000 families in rural areas and 24,000 families in urban areas are yet to be covered.
In the financial inclusion plan, two accounts per households (one for the male member and other for female) were opened by banks in rural in urban areas.
A senior banker said according to the Census 2011, the list of households, both in the rural and urban areas, has been provided to lead district managers of the bank by the district administration.
