ECB cuts key rate by 50 bps

The European Central Bank (ECB) cut its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points to two per cent today, matching a record low, as the deepening recession pressed policy makers into action.

The bank was now looking ahead to its March meeting as the next important occasion to consider changing interest rates, said ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet.

Today's cut, in line with consensus forecasts, marks the fourth in just over three months.
