Total resources raised through private placements declined by 4.2 per cent to Rs 64949 crore during 2001-02, as compared to Rs 67836 crore in 2000-01, as per data released by the Reserve Bank of India.
Incidentally, 2001-02 was the first year when funds mobilised through private placements registered a decline since 1995-96.
In the Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy 2002-03 released by the RBI, time series data on private placement has been put out for the first time along with nine other new time series tables, mostly covering the rural and capital market segment.

Further, the time series has been extended up to 1950-51 wherever possible to enable better database.
In the private placement market, although the total amount raised has gone down, the number of entities raising funds have increased from 587 last year to 951.
While funds raised by private institutions continue to record a rise, the fall in total mobilisations can be primarily attributed to decline in funds raised by the public institutions.
Public financial institutions, in particular, have raised 33 per cent less capital from private placements at Rs 17391 crore in 2001-02, as against Rs 26201 crore last year.
