The government is again on the lookout for senior management in state-run banks and will conduct interviews next week for executive directors' position. |
Last week, the government appointed five executive directors in public sector banks after a long delay. |
The government has called about 70 candidates from state-run banks for interviews for the position of executive directors on Monday and Tuesday. |
The government will select about 15-17 candidates for the said position. Candidates who have been general managers for at least two years and have two years of service left are considered eligible for the interview. |
A four-member committee comprising Vinod Rai, secretary banking, ministry of finance, a deputy governor of RBI, possibly V. Leeladhar, a professor of the Indian Institute of Management, and a senior banker, will conduct the interviews, the official said. |
Once selection of executive directors is over, the government will start the process of appointment of chairmen and managing directors in state-run banks. |
In 2008, as many as nine chairmen and managing directors are due for retirement, including top officials of large banks like Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, and Central Bank of India. |
Meanwhile, government appointed five new executive directors in state-run banks Wednesday. Those appointed are K.K. Agarwal at Allahabad Bank, B.M. Mittal at UCO Bank, T.M. Bhasin at United Bank of India, G. Narayanan at Indian Overseas Bank, and Bhasker Sen at Dena Bank. |
These appointments came with a huge delay, with some of the positions lying vacant for over two months. |
However, Arun Kaul, general manager, Punjab National Bank, who was expected to go as second executive director in UCO Bank, was awaiting final order from the government until the time of writing this report. |
In addition, government has yet to select a candidate for second executive director for Udupi-based Syndicate Bank. |
All the banks that have total business of over 1 trln rupees are eligible for two executive directors. |
