LIC kitty's market value crosses Rs 5,00,000 cr

The market value of Life Insurance Corporation of India's investments as on March 31, 2006, was over Rs 5,00,000 crore. The behemoth's investments stood at Rs 4,65,100.67 crore during the same period.
 
The corporation invested Rs 59,625.54 crore in infrastructure and social sector, Rs 2,839.51 crore in house property. Of the Rs 2,839.51 crore in house property, Rs 19,800 crore was housing investments.
 
LIC has invested RS 17,669 crore in central government securities, Rs 1,115 crore in state government securities, Rs 1,820 crore in social infrastructure, Rs 3,249 crore in debentures, bonds, and in the corporate sector, Rs 3,550 crore in equity shares till August, Chairman T S Vijayan said.
 
The corporation is targeting 5 per cent revenue from bancassurance, of which 2.74 per cent has already been achieved. LIC has tied up with 39 banks.
 
LIC celebrates October as social security month every year. It has enhanced benefits under Janashree Bima Yojana from August. The group insurance scheme is for people below poverty line, and even persons marginally above the poverty line. Minimum of 25 persons should be there to be eligible for the scheme.
 
In the event of the death of the member, sum assured of Rs 30,000 will become payable to the nominee, Rs 75,000 will be given on death or permanent total disability due to accident, Rs 37,500 for partial permanent disability due to accident.
 
In addition, there is a free add-on scholarship benefit under Shiksha Sahayog Yojana for children of the members of Janashree Bima Yojana.
 
The premium is Rs 200, of which Rs 100 will be paid by the member, NGO, state government, central government and the balance Rs 100 is borne from the social security fund maintained with LIC of India.
 
LIC has covered over 1.73 crore persons under its social security schemes. State government of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Goa have bought the scheme for BPL population.
 
It has given Rs 809 crore as claims under its social security schemes and given Rs 20 crore as scholarship to children in 2005-06.
 
LIC plans to launch two children's plan besides, ULIPS and non-ULIP products this year.
