National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned an amount of Rs 114.07 crore under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund XVII to the Government of Gujarat for widening and strengthening of 21 major district roads (MDRs) in 14 districts of the state.

The project will improve rural connectivity of 21 roads having total length of 251.32 kms, a statement said. The project envisages widening to two lanes of the existing single lane 21 MDRs, having heavy traffic and poor riding surface.

These roads connect major agri-marketing centres with villages producing important agricultural commodities.

As the existing roads have heavy traffic, conversion to two lane along with the improvement works proposed will help in catering to an increasing volume of traffic as many of these roads provide vital links to marketing centres, health centres and pilgrimage centres, the statement said.

The project will cover 124 villages with 24 marketing centres.

Government of Gujarat has initiated steps to provide double line connectivity to major roads as part of their overall vision to improve the rural infrastructure.

The districts including Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Bharuch, Bhavnagar, Dahod, Gandhinagar, Jamnagar, Mehsana, Narmada, Navsari, Sabarkantha, Surat, Tapi and Vadodara.
