Rupee logs best gain in a week, closes at 54.28

The currency appreciated by eight paise on continued dollar selling by exporters and mild capital inflows

The rupee today appreciated by eight paise, its biggest gain in nearly a week, to close at 54.28 against the dollar on continued dollar selling by exporters and mild capital inflows.

Bonds rule bearish
Government bonds continued to rule lower on sustained selling pressure from banks and companies. The 8.15 per cent government security maturing in 2022 dipped to Rs 101.38 from Rs 101.45 previously, while its yield inched up at 7.93 per cent from 7.92 per cent.

Call rates also end lower
Overnight money rates also ended down due to lack of demand from borrowing banks amidst ample liquidity. It finished lower at 7.60 per cent from 7.70 per cent yesterday.
