The Indian rupee weakened by 4 paise to 46.73 a dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange today on increased demand for the US currency from importers.
The rupee had ended 7 paise higher at 46.69/70 a $ in the previous session.
Forex dealers said demand for the dollar from importers mainly weighed on the rupee sentiment.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index, Sensex, rose by 40.40 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 17,978.56 points in the opening trade today.
