All branches of State Bank of India (SBI) in Orissa remained open on Sunday to make up for the loss transaction on Saturday due to break down of its core banking service (CBS) server at Mumbai.
“The SBI authorities took decision to open all its branches in some of the states including Orissa to facilitate the customers, who were disappointed on Saturday due to the technical problems,” said a senior officer of the bank.
The SBI Officers’ Association extended support to the authorities and worked on Sunday despite it being a holiday. “Our association cooperated with the authorities to keep open all 540 branches of the bank in the state,” said LN Patra, the zonal secretary (south zone) of SBI Officers’ Association.
The bank did not transact any business on Friday (September 30) due to half-yearly closing. The business of the bank on the next day (Saturday) was also crippled due to the technical snag.
“The decision to open the bank on Sunday was a great relief. Otherwise, closure of bank for three consecutive days, particularly at the beginning of the Dussehra Puja festival would have caused lot of hardship for the customers,” said Sudarshan Das, a retired government officer. The same sentiment was echoed by shop owners and traders who banked with SBI. In fact, most of the branches of SBI today witnessed heavy turnout of customers.
Sources said, the Central Data Centre of the bank in Navi Mumbai 'crashed' under heavy load from number-crunching associated with half-year closing that piggy-backed normal core banking operations. This had a cascading 'tripping' impact on the network connecting to all its branches across the country.
