Sbi Operating Profit Seen At Rs 6,570 Crore For 2002-03

The largest public sector commercial bank, State Bank of India has achieved around Rs 6,570 crore operating profit for the year ended March 31, 2003.

While aggregate profit for all its 14 circles for the year 2002-03 stands at Rs 5,288 crore, while its five corporate account group (CAG) branches dhave booked a reduced Rs 402.08 crore profit against Rs 449.58 crore achieved in the previous year.

The forex department, on the other hand, managed a Rs 877.11 crore profit for the period.

Profit from the national banking group in 2001-02 was around Rs 2345.16 crore and the bank managed to record Rs 2558.15 crore profit in the first three quarters of 2002-03.

The total profit figure for 2002-03 would rise once the bank adds its profits from treasury operations which was around Rs 932 crore in the previous year. In the first nine month of 2002-03 SBI recorded a Rs 1232.96 crore profit from treasury.

The profit before tax (PBT) figure on the other hand was expected to be lower as officials from Mumbai said that SBI intends to make large provisioning for 2002-03.

This would bring down the profit after tax (PAT) figure considerably. The bank would declare its results on 19 June.

On the core banking operation side, the New Delhi circle has booked the largest profit figures at Rs 866.10 crore followed by Mumbai at Rs 795.69 crore.

Chandigarh, Lucknow and Chennai circles booked similar profits at Rs 474.89 crore, Rs 474.84 crore and Rs 469.41 crore, respectively.

The Patna Circle has booked a Rs 386.13 crore profit while the Bhopal circle managed a Rs 325.76 crore.

Hyderabad and Kolkata circles on the other hand booked profits at Rs 304.32 crore and Rs 282.28 crore respectively.

Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhubane-swar, and Guwahati Circles booked profits of Rs 250.36 crore, Rs 248.14 crore, Rs 142.38 crore, and Rs 142.37 crore respectively.Kerala was the last among all the 14 circles of the bank at Rs 125.20 crore.

The fact that the economy was in the grip of a recession showed in its corporate lending profit figures when the bank registered a net loss of Rs 5.75 crore loss from its Corporate Lending Group.

The bank appears to have managed to make good the loss in the last quarter and its total profit figure touched Rs 402.08 crore.

This however was a 10 per cent fall against Rs 449.58 crore recorded in 2001-02.
