Standard Chartered Bank announced today the appointment of Sreeram Iyer to the newly-created position of chief operating officer, India, to oversee the international lender’s operational functions.

Iyer, an old hand at the bank, would be responsible for technology-related areas, operations, compliance, assurance and corporate affairs.

“Given the importance of India to the overall scheme of things at Standard Chartered, the idea is to strengthen the leadership and the top team with more hands on the deck because of the growth opportunity in the country,” Iyer said. He was earlier the head of the outsourcing unit for Standard Chartered Bank, and the Chief Information Officer.

Iyer returns to India from Singapore where he was the global programme director for the integration of the erstwhile American Express Bank’s consumer banking business with Standard Chartered. The bank has just concluded the integration process at over 40 locations after the AmEx acquisition in 2007.
